EMA Days Bhutan: Guiding Aspiring Scholars Toward Global Opportunities

By  Pema Choden,

EMA Country Representative, Bhutan

EMA Days 2024 was the stage for the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA) Bhutan Chapter to hold a lively, insightful event for aspiring Bhutanese scholars interested in pursuing global educational opportunities through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) programmes. Led by Country Representative Janga Basnet with the support of Dorji Wangmo and Pema Choden, the event hosted 50 eager attendees out of over 100 registrants, all motivated to learn about the pathways, resources, and tools for accessing European higher education. The session empowered attendees with valuable knowledge for their application journeys with topics covering everything from programme overviews and scholarship details to catalog navigation and admission requirements.

Janga Basnet, a current student of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Global Forestry (GloFor), began the event with an overview of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) programmes. Erasmus Mundus offers specialized, prestigious master’s degrees designed through collaborative efforts among universities across multiple countries. They span diverse fields, including Agriculture, Forestry, Health Sciences, Law, and Urban Planning, fostering a dynamic, cross-cultural academic experience. The speakers, each alumni of different Erasmus Mundus programmes, shared personal insights and guidance on navigating the catalogue, understanding program requirements, and optimizing scholarship applications.

Following Janga’s presentation, Pema Choden (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Global Environment and Development - MERGED) and Dorji Wangmo (Erasmus Mundus Programme on Flood Risk Management - FLOODRisk) further demystified the Erasmus Mundus experience by detailing specific programmes, consortium structures, elective courses, and internships available to students. Dorji offered valuable tips on crafting an impactful motivational letter, while Janga shared actionable insights for those interested in the Global Forestry Programme. The session concluded with a robust Q&A session, where participants clarified doubts, gathered personalized advice, and discussed potential challenges and solutions.

This engaging and informative event demonstrated EMA Bhutan’s commitment to uplifting Bhutanese scholars, opening doors to new opportunities, and inspiring the next generation of global leaders.
