The Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni Association (EMA) and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree of Science in Nuclear Engineering, SARENA - SAfe and REliable Nuclear Applications, hosted a comprehensive Pre-Departure Orientation Session on 15th June 2024 for its incoming students. This virtual event equipped participants with essential information and support to prepare them for their upcoming academic journey in Europe.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. Alexis Amachree, the EMA SARENA Program Representative. Ms Amachree highlighted EMA's commitment to ensuring a smooth two-year journey for all students heading for the SARENA masters. She emphasized the benefits of being an EMA member and elaborated on the association's structure. Information about EMA projects, EMA days, and volunteering opportunities was also shared.
The session covered various aspects of living and studying abroad, including:
Visa and Immigration Requirements: Students gained insights into the necessary documentation and procedures for obtaining visas and navigating immigration regulations in their host countries.
Academic Expectations: The session clarified the structure of the SARENA programme, including coursework, examinations, and assessment methods. Additionally, students received valuable advice on adapting to different teaching styles prevalent in European universities.
Financial Planning and Cost of Living: The orientation addressed financial considerations like budgeting, scholarships, and accessing funds while abroad. This session offered practical guidance on managing living expenses in various European cities.
Cultural Adjustment and Community Building: The event acknowledged potential culture shock and provided tips for acclimating to new environments. Students also had the opportunity to connect with peers and build a support network before they arrive in Europe.
Logistical Concerns: Information was provided to help students navigate travel arrangements, transportation upon arrival, housing options, and general living conditions in their host cities.
One of the highlights of the event was the interactive Q&A session when students asked questions directly to the organizers and guests. These sessions provided personalized support and clarified specific concerns, ranging from developing EMA projects to internships. Despite being an online event, the interactions helped students build a sense of community and support before they arrive in Europe.
