EMA Welcomes the Future: New Meta4.0 Edition Takes Flight

By Folco Perego,

EMA Programme Representative for Meta4.0

A novel and thrilling chapter for the fresh cohort of the Meta4.0—Master’s in manufacturing 4.0 by intElligent and susTAinable technologies— programme began on the week of 9 September 2024..

Their inaugural induction week at the École Centrale de Lyon – ENISE included an introductory meeting with Nikshan Paudel, Director of the Student & Alumni Relations Unit (S&A) of the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA). A Nepali native who lived across Western Europe and is now based in the UK, he rose from EMA member to S&A Coordinator, Programme Representative Network Manager, and now S&A Unit Director. This promising meeting centred on the thriving projects carried out by the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association throughout the year, and the wide array of possibilities available to its members and volunteers.

The students—hailing from twenty-one nations throughout Africa, South and North America, Asia, and Europe—are keen to dive into the vibrant ethos of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's program (EMJM), striving for academic excellence while weaving themselves into the ever-expanding fabric EMA network. Seen here, the 25 students of the new cohort stand as a vivid tapestry of global talent, each individual bringing their own unique story and culture to the group. A mosaic of diversity, they are a testament to the EMA’s core values: excellence, diversity, sustainability, education, development, and equality.

Their presence in the historic Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in Saint-Étienne—renowned as a UNESCO City of Design—reflects this perfectly. This vibrant square hosts numerous markets, outreach events, and Christmas celebrations throughout the year.

These students are not only a representation of EMA’s values but also exemplify the broader mission of the EMA and EMJM programs. By fostering a culture of collaboration and engagement, these programs encourage students to participate in volunteer opportunities, enhancing their network and fostering meaningful connections among Erasmus Scholars.

Some of these incredible projects include the Inter-Connected project aims to enhance intercultural competence and youth leadership by training 15 certified intercultural trainers to deliver workshops to EMJM students; the Period Empowerment Network (PEN), which seeks to enhance youth and youth workers’ skills in Menstrual health and hygiene by developing training programs and resources to challenge stigmas and promote awareness; and the Erasmus Mundus Association Podcast which highlights experiences from individuals across the globe who received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

As this new cohort starts their journey, they are ready to make a real difference with their unique backgrounds and shared goals for a more connected world.
