As the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA) wraps up another remarkable year, Dr Md. Ashiqur Rahman, EMA President, shares his insights into the association’s milestones, ongoing initiatives, and plans for the future, in an official interview with Mr Md. Mahamudul Hasan Mredul, Editor of the EMA Newsletter.

Editor, EMA Newsletter: Dr. Md Ashiqur Rahman, thank you for joining us for this interview. As we close 2024, could you share some key highlights of EMA’s activities and achievements?

Dr Md. Ashiqur Rahman, EMA President

EMA President: Thank you for having me. This has indeed been a landmark year for EMA. One of the most significant highlights was hosting the EMA’s 18th General Assembly and our first-ever Annual Conference in Istanbul, Türkiye. It was a vibrant gathering that underscored EMA’s commitment to fostering a sense of global community among Erasmus Mundus students and alumni. Another outstanding achievement was receiving the prestigious Organisation Award from the European Commission during the Erasmus Mundus 20th Anniversary Conference in Brussels. This recognition honours EMA’s unparalleled contributions to the Erasmus Mundus programme and its role as a cornerstone for the community since 2006.

Editor: Congratulations on the award! How does it reflect on EMA’s legacy and impact?

EMA President: This award is a testament to the collective efforts of EMA’s volunteers, Management Board members, Steering Committee, and our broader global community. EMA has been the voice of Erasmus Mundus students and alumni for almost two decades, influencing policies and shaping the programme’s trajectory. The European Commission’s acknowledgement of EMA as the “bedrock of the Erasmus Mundus students and alumni” reinforces our significance as a vital stakeholder. It’s a shared achievement for everyone who has contributed to our journey.

Editor: The General Assembly and the Annual Conference were major milestones. Could you elaborate on their importance?

EMA President: Absolutely. The General Assembly and Annual Conference in Istanbul provided an extraordinary platform to exchange ideas, celebrate successes, and explore new collaborations. It brought together alumni, students, and stakeholders from around the world, further solidifying EMA’s role as a bridge-builder. Sessions ranged from digital education to policy dialogues aimed at empowering our members. This conference set a precedent for future events, emphasizing our commitment to professional growth and networking.

Editor: As EMA prepares for its 20th Anniversary in 2026, what initiatives are in motion to celebrate this milestone?

EMA President: The 20th Anniversary of EMA will be a significant moment to reflect on EMA’s achievements and chart a visionary path forward. Preparations are underway, with plans to host events that honour our legacy while focusing on the future. The overarching theme will be celebrating the power of international education in transforming lives and communities.

Editor: Looking ahead to 2025, what are the key priorities for EMA?

EMA President: 2025 will be a pivotal year for EMA as we prepare for the Presidency elections and Management Board selections. Ensuring an inclusive process is paramount. Additionally, our priorities include strengthening sustainability through diversified funding, launching targeted membership campaigns, and enhancing EMA’s visibility globally. We also want to improve our members' engagement through different EMA platforms and ESAA activities and by featuring success stories that inspire our community.

Editor: What initiatives have shaped EMA’s activities this year?

The Mundus Erasmian, one of EMA's key initiatives of 2024

EMA President: EMA has significantly expanded its collaborative efforts, establishing partnerships and engaging in various projects as coordinator and partner. These initiatives align with EMA's mission to enhance international education and foster a vibrant global community. We launched the final report of the Visa Experience Survey, which will serve as a vital resource for addressing mobility challenges. Another highlight is the launch of the “Mundus Erasmian” magazine, a publication showcasing over 60 contributors’ insights and experiences. It is a platform that celebrates our community’s diversity and achievements.

We emphasized outreach through Pre-Departure Orientation events and EMA Days celebrations worldwide, hosting over 70 events. Furthermore, we have strengthened relationships with several Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) programmes through Memoranda of Understanding, enhancing collaboration and student-alumni engagement. We also led an International Poster Competition, which not only showcased the talents of our community but also reinforced EMA’s role in promoting global engagement through creative expression and research. As of December 1st 2024, EMA has 339 active volunteers, with around 500 applications for volunteering received this year alone, reflecting the growing interest in contributing to our mission.

Editor: Finally, what message would you like to share with the EMA community as we step into 2025?

EMA President: I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to every member of the EMA community for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we’ve achieved remarkable milestones, and there’s so much more to look forward to. As we prepare for new leadership, celebrate our 20th Anniversary, and continue advocating for international education, I encourage everyone to stay engaged and contribute their talents. EMA’s strength lies in its people, and together, we will continue making a difference globally.

Editor: Thank you, Dr. Rahman, for sharing your insights and vision. We wish EMA continued success in the coming year.

EMA President: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure to reflect on our journey and share the exciting path ahead. Happy New Year 2025!
